Energy efficiency improvements in the U.S. electric power sector could reduce electric consumption by 7 to 11 percent more than currently projected over the next two decades if key barriers can be addressed, according to a preliminary analysis of potential energy savings released recently by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) during an Edison Foundation conference which examined strategies to meet the growing demand for electricity which is expected to soar 30 percent by 2030, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
“This study demonstrates the potential of energy efficiency to offset some of the projected need for new electric generation as cutting-edge technologies become available and are adopted. We think a 7-percent efficiency improvement is realistic – and gains of 11 percent or more are technologically feasible – depending on the degree to which various obstacles can be overcome.”
-- Dr. Michael Howard, senior vice president at EPRI
That demand growth projection would be even higher without the implementation of existing building codes, appliance standards and market-driven consumer incentives, which will shave electricity consumption by 23 percent, according to the EPRI-EEI study. However, additional efficiency gains could be achieved only by overcoming major market, regulatory and consumer barriers, the analysis found. . . .
Essential steps include increased consumer education; adoption and enforcement of aggressive building codes and appliance standards; creation of utility business models that promote increased efficiency within the power sector; and adoption of electricity pricing policies that more accurately reflect the cost of providing electricity to consumers – and give them the information they need to use it wisely. . . .
At the same time, consumers’ ever-increasing appetite for electricity-hungry devices – even with continuing efficiency improvements – will keep electricity demand on a steady upward trajectory. A 42-inch plasma television consumes two and a half times more energy (250 watts) than a standard 27-inch TV (100 watts). And while many large household appliances have become more efficient over the years, many smaller devices have not. Two 30-watt set-top television boxes, for example, may consume as much electricity as a large refrigerator.

I read your article with some real interest. I think that there are some usage behaviors that might run contrary to your examples. Personal electricity usage may well likely decline due to the definitive change in change in the personal computer industry. The form and size of computing devices continues to be shrinking with widespread adoption of smaller form handheld devices of much greater usability. In addition, cloud computing will reduce the need for need for hard drives and PC's and programs will be available from anywhere. Many uses for paper may decline as a result when people no longer have to clip coupons from the newspaper. I think that the target you indicated should readily exceeded and we can look at other targets close to the individual or family that can generate other significant reductions. We can actually start to work on "power" itself which is not all created the same. We learn, we innovate,we move ahead!

I wonder if there is a study which talks about the electric car kits that people are using to convert their cars to run on electricity, and how that may be causing a higher need for electricity in the future.
Obviously there is a tradeoff there, that probably makes sense. Power plants need become more efficient and use cleaner fuels. Add this to the consumer education, and the like, and we could certaining exceed the 11%.

This is an extremely interesting and informative posting on utility based energy efficiency programs found by EPRI. Indeed conservation of energy is highly required in the present time.

New energy sources and conserving existing sources are very much in everyones minds these days. Their are steps one can take to do something about it...limited though they are.
The biggest sources, are out of the average persons hands, and that's been a large part of the problem. The big energy source people don't want to improve the situation around the world. Yes...it's about money and power...OPEC; BP; PG&E; ad nauseum. Forget them!...we all have to do what we can on our own.
If a lot of people would use the energy they expend bitching on forums and article comments, you would see more progress. I am an eternal optomist. I believe that revolutionary energy sources will be developed and optomized, and turn this whole dreary situation into a bonanza for us all. This will not happen because the negative, smart-ass, name callers, contributed anything! They never will. As usual, they are caught up in the sound of their own wheels.
I am working on solar panels for my house. I'm building them myself, for about $80-90 dollars apiece. Each one puts out about 150 watts. I'm also involved with Hydrogen Conversion Assist for my vehicles. I have found that, the people that say that this doesn't work, have never tried it. We have, and it DOES work! http://www.ebuyersreview.com/gasconversion/
We managed to raise our fuel mileage by about 8 miles per gallon. That's not astounding...but it is an improvement, and it is saving me money. We're working on improving that.
New technology is coming. I believe that. Even in spite of all the negative do-nothinger's. In coming time, fossil fuel will not be that valuable anymore, and the people that are murdering our citizens, and spitting in our faces, will go back to being nothing...powerless!

I didn't want the question to drag on and on.but what are the most COST EFFECTIVE energy improvements! I figured theres gotta be some people out there that can tell me what works and what doesn't!

Baby Clothes
When choosing and buying baby fashion, parentage can be with many that, in the baby's days, can seem utterly confusing. STEINEL Occupancy & Motion Sensors / Lights with inbuilt sensor.
Primarily sensors are used for energy conservation which we believe would be widely welcomed for various applications in common areas like: Toilets, Car Parks, Lobbies, Corridors, Cabins, warehouse etc..
Principally, these sensors operate on human presence and ambient light conditions and have the capability to handle multiple electrical fixtures with a single sensor installation. You can even control your Air-conditions using these sensors.

As long as the requirements to receive an Energy Star label are adjusted to keep up with current efficiencies I can see that tag being very useful. If in order to achieve an ES rating the product had to be in the top 20% (just picking a number) of all similar products manufacturers would be finding themselves chasing technology to keep up with the competition.

One issue governments or manufacturing associations could address, is to facilitate standards for communications between appliances to recognize standby mode. For example, if the TV and VCR are powered off, there is no reason to burn 30W in the cable box. Likewise, if a computer is powered off, the router and DSL modem can be in standby. People power off the computer, but not usually the networking appliances.

Excellent points. Although the energy consumption of specific appliances or devices (tv, refrigerator, computer, clothes dryer) has generally been reduced, most people have more of these, so overall energy consumption increases. One of the problems here is the energy consumption of devices that are NOT BEING USED -- i.e., cable boxes, computers, phone chargers, etc. that consume power whenever they're plugged in.
