Biopact also reported that Researchers have modified E. coli to produce efficient higher-chain alcohol biofuels
Researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have developed a new method for producing next-generation biofuels by genetically modifying Escherichia coli bacteria to be an efficient biofuel synthesizer. The method could lead to the mass production of higher-chain alcohol-based biofuels like butanol and isobutanol, which are more efficient than ethanol. The technology has been licenced to Gevo Inc., a next-generation biofuel company supported by Khosla Ventures and the Virgin Green Fund.
Isobutanol has several practical advantages over ethanol (density, not hygroscopic); what are the efficiency advantages?

Isobutanol seems to be just one example of what could be produced by this technology - it appears that it lays open the path to many of the higher-chain products.
Here is a primer to some of the alternatives:

Which one is best is probably a matter strictly for the chemists and production engineers - it gets hairy and complicated to work out, but on the face of it the nearer you can get to biodiesel or petrol the better - hopefully this technology can do this.

Isobutanol has significantly higher energy per liter than ethanol. It runs in unmodified gasoline/petrol engines.
Nice link, DaveMart. The point is that biology can be tweaked to make just about any organic molecule you want. Medical biotech started with E. Coli and now uses plants and animals modified to produce medicines, in addition to micro-organisms.
Some of the firms mentioned in DaveMart's link are going to get very big. Biosynthetic petrol and diesel will eventually be made economically competitive with fossil fuels.
It may take ten years or more. Maize ethanol for fuel has always been a bad deal. Biology can do a lot better.
