Tennant Company (NYSE: TNC), annouced ech2o™ (pronounced “echo”) technology in a press release, a breakthrough cleaning technology that electrically activates plain tap water, making it behave like a powerful detergent without any added chemicals.
According to Tennant, the patent-pending ech2o™ technology offers eco-friendly advantages including lower costs, ease of use and improved operator safety plus an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cleaning methods. ech2o’s cleaning effectiveness is proven to be the same or better than general purpose cleaners, without the negative environmental impact and health issues associated with producing, packaging, transporting, using and disposing of traditional cleaning chemicals. Among ech2o’s additional benefits, it uses 70 percent less water than traditional cleaning methods. ech2o begins as water and ends as water.
"Our new ech2o technology is a category-changing advancement for the cleaning industry, and delivers on our goal to offer cleaning solutions that lower cost-of-use, improve health and safety and are more environmentally friendly. By changing the properties of plain tap water, ech2o enables it to clean as well as, or better than, traditional chemical-based cleaners. It virtually eliminates any negative impact the cleaning process may have on our natural environment," said Chris Killingstad, Tennant Company's president and chief executive officer.
According to their press release, inside a special ech2o unit installed in a Tennant floor-cleaning machine, two primary steps transform normal tap water into a powerful cleaning solution. In the first step, water passes through electrified screens in the oxygenation chamber, creating highly oxygenated micro-bubbles. In the second step, the oxygenated water is sent through a water cell where an electric current is applied. Flowing out of the water cell is highly charged, acidic and alkaline water with all the attributes of a powerful cleaner. In this activated state, ech2o is an effective cleaning agent that poses no harm to the surfaces or finishes it cleans, or to people using the technology.
The electrically charged water attacks the dirt, breaks it into smaller particles and suspends it off the floor’s surface—enabling the scrubber’s pads or brushes to easily remove the soil. Approximately 45 seconds after it was created, the cleaning solution returns to plain H2O. What is left in the recovery tank is just plain water and dirt. In this process, 100 percent of the water used reverts to neutral tap water and can be handled and disposed of safely.
ech2o will be available on Tennant and Nobles branded floor scrubbers as early as this fall 2007
I hope this technology makes it into a new type of washing machine for clothes. That would really be a planet saving advancement.

I'm skeptical. It sounds a lot like the fluid filled plastic balls and discs that were being hyped as able to replace detergents a few years back, supposedly changing the ion balance. Oxygenation can have a bleaching effect but agitation etc tends to oxygenate water without technological assistance. Any science based evidence of the effectiveness of this "breakthrough"?

This sounds like snake oil. I would like to see comparisons between this ech2o water, plain water, and hyper oxygenated water.
Until then, it's just marketing.

It is fairly well documented that by bombarding water with electrical impulses the calcium will change its molecular structture, thereby making the water less inclined to scale. Could this, along with some form of oxygenation process be the fundamental elements of this process? One thing for sure, something has to change in future as we continue to pollute our streams and waterways with billions of tons of salt, chemicals and phosphates. We are running out of oil, where nearly all chemicals come from, we are running out of phosphates which are extremely costly energy wise to mine and refine and deliver. Even if the process isn't as effective as the 'old way', as far as cleaning is concerned, it is a small price to pay for conserving energy and our waterways and aquifers.

It sounds like they are making Ozone (O3) and mixing it with water, Ozone is a reactive chemical that has powerful cleaning and disinfecting capabilities. It will break down (into O2) within seconds to minutes depending on conditions.

Sounds good. Let's do it.

I believe they are ionizing the water - electrically charging it by adding or knocking off electrons from the H2O molecule. The oxygen bubbles are there to help ionize the water. Ionized water can have acidic or alkaline properties depending on the ionization. I just checked their announcement and it seems they are producing both. So they probably self-neutralize each other very quickly.

I would love this to actually work as it would be nice to offer customers chemical free carpet cleaning without any chemicals. being in the industry for many years I highly doubt this will acutally work. I had those cleaning balls by the way. They were no were near as good as detergent

Technology that Turns Water into Cleaning Solution.

This is correct - deionized and ionized water both have their uses for either external astringent uses or consumption.

As stated previous is their any documentation on this technology? I would like to read something from someone other than Tennant.

Nice post. I agreed, carpet cleaning is one of the most trickiest thing to take care of.
It is always good and recommended to use a carpet cleaning company to take care of my carpet.

Looking for a website which would allow me to find the value of my Kia 2010. The GM doesn't give values for 2010 models. Is there another tool online which I could use?

Good to know this discovery. I can say that this breakthrough technology is certified eco-friendly. Today, although most people are having busy schedules, they still concern on finding ways to save our environment. Even such great cleaning services for carpet (Grand Rapids, Michigan for example), they want to use materials and cleaning process without harming our health and the environment. In our hometown, Grand Rapids, carpet cleaning services are helpful among moms who are having busy schedules sometimes. These services help to lessen their worries.
