James, have you looked at Eprida's gasification process? It uses that extra carbon to produce a fertilizer that is reported to be good at restoring fertility to depleted soils while also sequestering the bulk of the carbon for centuries in the soil. In addition, the slow-release nature of the fertilizer greatly reduces nutrient runoff. Here's a PDF of a Nature article describing the inspiration for the technology and the technology itself.
