As an example of the emergence of battery technologies, for back-up power, other than lead-acid systems, Cobasys, a provider of energy storage systems using their NiGUARD® NiMH battery technology, announced that it has completed the installation of a backup power system for Automation Alley's data system.
The Cobasys system will provide emergency back-up power for Automation Alley's data center and lighting systems at their facility in Troy, Michigan. The system provide lower cost of ownership, longer cycle life, a smaller footprint and reduce weight requirements by as much as 66% compared to lead acid systems. The newly installed Cobasys system consists of two cabinets with six-48 volt NiGUARD boxes in parallel providing approximately 80 kW per cabinet.
Cobasys is a joint venture between Chevron Technology Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX - News) and Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENER - News).
80 kwh of storage per home would really smooth out any variations from solar, wind, and water power.
Incentives for energy consumers could be created by charging the home unit with cheaper off peak power, saving on electric bills.
Then using the power during peak use times. Either in the home or selling it back to the utility grid.
