Welcome to the Energy Blog

  • The Energy Blog is where all topics relating to The Energy Revolution are presented. Increasingly, expensive oil, coal and global warming are causing an energy revolution by requiring fossil fuels to be supplemented by alternative energy sources and by requiring changes in lifestyle. Does this increase the "turning capacity" of the grid without burning fuel?

Maybe they could add a superconducting magnetic energy storage system to extend the capacity of this system to handle wind and solar power.

This could be counted as some rotating reserves. Flywheels are good at providing a lot of power, but not as good at storing a lot of energy. So in case a generating station went off line, the flywheel could provide power in the interim until say a gas turbine was brought on line.

I would guess that flywheel system could also be used to improve power factor so that more power could be sent over transmission lines into the area where it resides.
