Have you considered that CAFE standards are a very poor way to go about improving the mileage of the US vehicle fleet? They force manufacturers to build more efficient cars, but they don't encourage consumers to buy them - and then there's the SUV loophole you can, well, drive a truck through.

Wouldn't it be more sensible to increase petroleum fuel taxes, and give the money back in some other way (cuts in income taxes, for instance)? That way people have an incentive to use fuels more efficiently.
